Physical commodity trading is hard.
That’s exactly why it still works.

AI is automating desk jobs. But moving real cargo — crude oil, metals, agri products — still requires people who understand the contracts, the counterparties, and the risk. This is how you become one of them.

“The people who move real cargo are not being replaced by AI. They’re becoming more valuable.”

Damien Würsten — Founder, SACA

I didn’t learn this in a classroom.

My first job in commodity trading, nobody handed me a manual. There was no guide that told me how a letter of credit really works when a buyer stalls, or what happens when your freight forwarder misreads an Incoterm, or how to read a counterparty’s hesitation before they go silent on you.

I had to learn the hard way. Deal by deal. Mistake by mistake. Watching cargo I was responsible for sit in a port while I figured out paperwork nobody had warned me about.

That’s not a complaint — it’s the point. The difficulty is the moat. Everyone who quits at the complexity leaves the field to the people who stayed and figured it out. Those people run the trades that move the world’s real goods.

The moment everything changed

My first cargo. A hairnet. And a lesson I’ll never forget.

That photo was taken in a warehouse I’d never been to, in a country I barely knew, standing in front of bags I’d spent months fighting to get there. I was smiling because I’d finally closed my first full trade — from origination to delivery.

Nobody told me the financing would nearly fall through, or that the freight booking would get rolled at the last minute. I figured it out because I had no choice.

But I kept thinking: if someone had just shown me how this actually works — the documents, the risk, the logic of a trade — I could have done it faster and with fewer mistakes. That’s why I built SACA.

“I built SACA for the practical knowledge I wish I had from day one. Not theory. Not charts. The real mechanics of how physical trades actually get done.”

— Damien Würsten, Founder & Commodity Trader
Why this matters right now

The desk jobs are being automated.
The execution jobs are not.

Right now, AI is very good at processing information, writing reports, and automating workflows that live entirely inside a computer. Whole categories of junior roles in finance, legal, and compliance are being restructured.

Physical commodity trading is different. It requires you to coordinate shipping lines, negotiate with sellers across time zones, manage risk on cargo that’s physically at sea, and build relationships with counterparties who trust you with real money and real goods.

That work doesn’t compress into a prompt. It requires operators who understand the full picture — contracts, freight markets, trade finance — and who can make judgment calls when things go sideways. Which they always do.
